The Scoop: They’ve never tried to be trendy. They’d never consider this place hip. And it’s hard to be “chic” when you’re running wings and tending bar. But Central City Tavern does manage to maintain its own comfy brand of sports bar charm. Even in a new location. The spiffed-up version of the Tavern (now off Howell Mill) still serves the best of their cold beer, hot pub fare, and familiar faces... all in front of the exact same bar they’ve always poured from. And this month is their one year anniversary of the makeover, which means extra cause for celebration during March Madness.
BEFORE: Once upon a time, Central City was in a dingy shingled dive on Peachtree and Collier. And once upon a time before that, this dive was called McNeely’s. Those who remember either will recall an Atlanta landmark in terms of well-loved hole-in-the-walls. The Tavern was a trusted joint for sports-watching, beer-swilling, and trivia-nighting. It also had, as many may remember, some pretty scary bathrooms. Unfortunately, once the lease was up, it was time for the building to be torn down... and for Central City to move on to cleaner pastures.
AFTER: Now this is definitely what you call a bar makeover. Central City Tavern has been relocated to the shiny, new-ish District at Howell Mill shopping center. And what the tavern lost in dive bar credibility, it maintained in Central City charm. They kept the same friendly staff, their loyal regulars, that trusted menu, the trivia nights, and -- amazingly enough -- the actual bar from the original location. Yep, the owner of Central City was able to salvage that 110-year-old mahogany frame (pictured) from the soon-to-be-demolished Peachtree site. They brought it here to help reestablish the original feel, then added a few new-age touches: twenty TVs and a 65” HDTV. Oh, and they also sprung for some sparkly-clean new bathrooms. So you could say that Central City Tavern is an entirely different place -- but that wouldn’t exactly be true; they’ve managed to hold on to all the things that matter. It just happens to come in a shiny new exterior.
