The Scoop: There’s now a greener place for Atlanta dogs to stay. With day care, boarding, and grooming services, everything at greendog is designed, first and foremost, to be dog-friendly. But it’s also an environmentally-friendly spot as well. Much more than doggy day care, this is like an eco-retreat for dogs. An “urban farm” that’s more barn than kennel. And most importantly, it’s a healthy, happy place for dogs to come and play while their favorite humans are away.
The Full Story: I’m greeted at the door by greendog resident Ivan. With squeaky bone in mouth, he proceeds on a full tour of his eco-friendly digs; I follow him around with camera. It’s like the dog version of MTV “Cribs” here as he bounds from reception couch back to play pens, looking back at the lens every so often. You can’t help but share in Ivan’s enthusiasm for his 8,000 square foot spread. Jennifer Nichols created the “urban farm” here in Castleberry Hill just this past November as a fun and safe place for dogs that’s also, by default, very environmentally-conscious.
While our tour guide is all about this attention, he doesn’t really seem to notice the eco-care Jennifer put into this place. But we definitely do. Energy-efficient appliances and lighting are complemented by white reflective roofing to help save more energy. All the paints and sealants in here are low in volatile organic compounds and Greendog’s grooming water is filtered, sanitized, and reclaimed for reuse in their low-flush toilets. The cleaning products they use are environmentally-safe. Cans, bottles, plastic and paper are internally recycled, and the doors, metalwork, and reception desks were all handmade by local artisans using recycled materials.
You can probably guess Ivan’s favorite part of his stay here is the massive amounts of affection he (and all the other dogs here) gets from the staff. They’re playing fetch, snuggling, nuzzling, and socializing with other residents. And when it’s time for bed, it’s definitely not behind prison-like chain fences. Each cozy den has hand-carved wooden doors, They’re under a soft night-light (so nobody gets scared of the dark), and soothing jazz plays each evening as house music. While employees at other boarding facilities leave in the early evening and don’t come back until after 7 p.m., the staff here stays around ‘til 10 p.m.for a late-night potty break and then returns again for early morning relief at 6:30.
You could say Ivan and the gang here at greendog definitely live the life. But come on, with adorable faces like these running around, you can’t say they don’t deserve it. And with this deal (along with the always-free introductory stay for first-timers), your pooch should definitely look into his own part-time crib at greendog.
