The Scoop: Handcrafted brews, an expansive menu (including sushi!) and arguably the best patio view in town. Park Tavern is an Atlanta standby when spring weather (finally!) rolls around, but it’s also a cozy downstairs den, perfectly suitable for February hibernation.
Full story: So you probably know what the patio is all about when it’s packed in the warmer months. But what about right now in the lovely month of February? What else is going on at Park Tavern that you need to know about? Funny you ask that (I realize you didn’t) because I just happened to find out for myself this week:
a) SUSHI. Yes, you read that right; Park Tavern has a sushi bar. And while it’s okay to be slightly skeptical (given that you’ve always been here for beer, sangria, maybe concerts and the upcoming Oysterfest), you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find their specialty rolls and Wild Caught Hawaiian sashimi-grade tuna are quite tasty. The menu includes only the freshest fish -- yellowtail, crab, eel, Wild American Georgia shrimp, salmon, and soft shell crab. There’s also cooked and veggie-only options, and traditional Saké to go with your meal. Their vendor has been recognized in the New York Times, Coastal Living and Food and Wine as the nation's top Hawaiian fish supplier, so you can trust it’s only the best in quality. I tried the Samurai and the Shogun rolls and, being an avid sushi fan (living only a few blocks away), I’ll definitely be back for a sushi night or two.
ON-SITE BREWING. Their extensive list of 25 brews is obvious when you read their menu, but did you know Park Tavern also has their own on-site brewery? Most people spend their Tavern time outside near the edge of Piedmont Park admiring the Midtown skyline, but if you venture inside that cozy downstairs den, you’ll see exactly where their handcrafted brews are made.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING. Maybe it’s that brew talking, but I really have a soft spot for any Atlanta establishment that can give me a little taste of the past. I’m a sucker for it, and for any server who can spit out interesting tidbits as my own personal mealtime Wikipedia. Over beers, I learned that Park Tavern’s original granite structure (from Stone Mountain!) was built in 1905 as racing horse stables. Later, in 1928, they turned it into a Men’s Golf Clubhouse and it wasn’t until 1990 that the building was renovated and opened as a restaurant and special events facility. Current owners, Paul and Angela, purchased the building in June 1999 and renamed the restaurant Park Tavern. The rest (including concerts, crazy Spiral Entertainment parties, and general Piedmont Park merriment) is just part of history in the making... including the newly-added Wii for all of us who enjoy a little virtual bowling in the bar.
So now that you have a few more February reasons to check out the tavern, cozy on up to one of these leather couches (or maybe that sushi bar) and treat yourself to some fresh rolls, a few brews, and a little dose of Atlanta history. And if the off-chance of gorgeous spring weather comes early this month (hey, it’s the South -- it happens), then head on out to the patio and enjoy the view!
